Using a Wooden Manikin

A wooden manikin can be a useful item to have on hand if you are beginning figure drawing or adding people into pictures.

The joints of the wooden model are similar to those of the body, as the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, ankles, and leg “joints” enable these parts to be moved to the desired position. You can use the model to re-create a particular pose as well as to check the proportions of your drawing.

How much have I used mine? I’ve used it occasionally to decide on various postures, though I usually work from photographs so I can capture the shadows, folds of the clothing, and facial expressions. It’s fun to work with, though, and my kids always enjoyed bending it about. I recently gave out small manikins to my 4th and 5th grade students as prizes for completing 30 drawings, and they loved them! Some went right to work, posing and drawing their new models.

There are lots of different types of manikins to choose from. You can find lifesize manikins, manga manikins, even animal manikins (including cats, dogs, and horses). If you have a chance, try using one as a model — it just might be the tool you’re looking for!
