There are many types of acrylic paints available for the crafter and artist. As with all art supplies, the more expensive the paint, the better the quality. It can be difficult to get the results you want with cheaper paint, so try to purchase the best you can afford. You can find these types of paints both online and in your local arts and crafts store.
Acrylic Craft Paints
These paints come in small bottles and can be purchased for $1-$2 at your local Wal-Mart or arts and crafts store. These are great paints for craft projects such as painting on wood or rocks, and their an inexpensive alternative for children to use when they’re just starting out.
Student Acrylics
These paints are a better than the craft acrylics, although they’re not the same quality as the more expensive paints. I like to use these paints in my painting classes — they are a good value and they can be purchased in both small and large quantities. I buy my classroom acrylics from Blick Art Supplies in half-gallon jugs; I also purchase the pump lids so students can help themselves to the paint.
Beginner Artist Acrylics
These are the next step up in acrylics. They’re a good choice for the serious student or beginning artist. They cost about $4 – $8 per tube or jar, and there are a number of brands to choose from. Some are also available in sets.
Heavy Body Acrylics
Heavy body acrylics have a smooth, buttery consistency. They are similar to oils in that they can be used to create texture with brushes or palette knives. These also come in single tubes, jars, or as sets.
Professional Acrylics
These are the highest quality acrylics, but they are also the most expensive. A 45 ml tube of paint can cost from $15 – $30 depending on the color.
